Meet Fisher Yu, an ardent believer in decentralization and a renowned expert in the realm of blockchain security and cryptography. As an entrepreneur and technical leader, Fisher's profound insights and strategic approach are at the forefront of transforming the digital landscape.
CTO of Babylon Labs and Developer of the Babylon Bitcoin staking protocol, Fisher has been instrumental in defining the company's vision, devising strategies, and leading groundbreaking R&D projects. His commitment to a decentralized future drives the development of the pioneering Bitcoin staking protocol.
Before diving into crypto, Fisher Yu invented a decentralized multimedia delivery system, which he later sold to Dolby Laboratories. He then rejoined Dolby, where he led the development, standardization, and production of decentralized multimedia delivery systems, enhancing the efficiency and security of digital content distribution.
Bitcoin-Enhanced Proof-of-Stake Security: Possibilities and Impossibilities
David Tse (Co-Founder, Babylon Protocol), Fisher Yu (CTO of Babylon Labs), Sreeram Kannan (Founder of Eigen Layer), and co-authors have achieved a significant milestone as their latest research paper has been accepted by the 2023 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, recognized as the world's leading security conference.
This research paper discusses the security issues inherent in Proof-of-Stake (PoS) chains and proposes a new protocol called Babylon, which uses an off-the-shelf PoS protocol to checkpoint onto the Bitcoin blockchain to address these issues. The article explains that PoS chains are energy-efficient and have fast finality, but are susceptible to non-slashable long-range safety attacks, low liveness resilience, and difficulty in bootstrapping from low token valuation. The Babylon protocol reduces the stake withdrawal delay from weeks to less than 5 hours, at a transaction cost of less than 10K USD per annum for posting the checkpoints onto Bitcoin.
From post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Southern California to a Senior Engineer at InterfereX Pty. Ltd., Fisher's journey is marked with significant contributions to distributed systems, machine learning, and blockchain technology.
Fisher's scholarly pursuit has been complemented with distinguished degrees from leading institutions like the Australian National University and Northwestern Polytechnical University. Specializing in Electrical Engineering, Fisher's academic journey is a testament to his commitment to deepening his expertise and constantly pushing boundaries.
Fisher has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Student Abroad and the Australian National University Graduate House Scholarship for Academic Excellence.
In a world where control of information infrastructure is often concentrated among a handful of companies, Fisher saw the potential of blockchains to empower individuals and propel innovation. This realization led to the foundation of Babylon, a revolutionary protocol designed to Scale Bitcoin to secure the decentralised world.
